On railways, cross-sections, open railway ditches, interceptor ditches and associated pre-drainage systems take over the condensation and discharge of surface water. The deep drainage system is arranged as a subsurface drainage system for receiving and discharging unbound soil water.

By selecting the position and stiffness of the highly elastic elements, the support can be effectively optimised. As speeds become higher, the reduction of dynamic loads and the equalisation of the longitudinal stiffness of the track become increasingly important.
